Sales tax is usually charged on price minus trade-in in most states, which is what this calculator assumes. A few states tax the full price regardless of trade-in — check your state DMV if your trade-in value is significant.

Tax rates shown are statewide base rates as of January 2026 — many states add county or city sales tax on top, which can add another 1–5%. Check your local rate before finalizing a budget.

Doc fees vary a lot by dealer and state — some states cap them by law, others don't regulate them at all. It's a legitimate, negotiable-in-some-states line item, not a scam by itself, but it's worth asking about upfront.
