Good to know
🌿
Typical depths: 2 to 3 inches of mulch around plants, about 4 inches of topsoil for new lawn areas, and 2 to 3 inches of gravel for paths. Picking a material sets a sensible starting depth.
⚖
Weights are approximate. Moisture changes the weight a lot, especially for mulch, compost, and soil. Ask your supplier for their exact figure if you're ordering by the ton.
🚚
Bulk is usually cheaper than bags. A cubic yard is 13.5 bags of 2 cubic feet, so for larger beds consider a delivery.

How it works

Volume in cubic feet is the area times depth in inches ÷ 12, increased by your extra percentage. Dividing by 27 gives cubic yards, and dividing by your bag size gives the number of bags. Approximate weight multiplies cubic yards by a typical weight per yard: about 800 lb for mulch, 1,200 for compost, 2,100 for topsoil, 2,700 for sand, 2,800 for gravel, and 2,600 for pea gravel or river rock. Choosing a material also sets a typical starting depth.

Frequently asked questions

How deep should I spread each material?

Two to three inches of mulch around plants, about four inches of topsoil for new lawn areas, and two to three inches of gravel for paths are common starting points.

How accurate are the weights?

They are rough averages. Moisture changes weight a lot, especially for mulch, compost, and soil. If you order by the ton, ask your supplier for their figure.

Is buying in bulk cheaper than bags?

Usually, for larger areas. A cubic yard equals 13.5 bags of 2 cubic feet, so bulk delivery tends to cost less once you need a few yards.

Can I enter an irregular area?

Yes. Enter the total square footage in the area box and it will be used instead of length and width.
